Block a ridiculous bill in the Senate right now that would block rules requiring government contractors to reveal which politicians they give money to.

“We will use every tool at our disposal to challenge those who try to silence our voice.”

Sounds good, right?

Except it was said by U.S. Chamber of Commerce President Tom Donohue, getting worked up about his feeling that Big Business is “intimidated” by the notion that maybe, just maybe, it would be good to know which corporations are spending how much to influence our government.

Don’t you feel sorry for the bullied and downtrodden likes of Exxon Mobil, General Electric, AT&T and Bank of America?

Sometimes Donohue’s rhetoric is more smooth than chunky. Describing recently how the Chamber will pick key races to interfere with rather than spread its millions and millions more broadly, he said, “We don’t do peanut butter deals.”

This all matters — a lot — because the Chamber leads the charge to keep corporate political spending in the dark. And there’s a ridiculous bill in the Senate right now that would block rules requiring government contractors to reveal which politicians they give money to.

In other words, we could soon have a law that would increase corruption by making it harder to find out if Big Business is, in essence, bribing its way to incredibly lucrative contracts that we the taxpayers foot the bill for.

Giant corporations are being “intimidated” all the way to the bank.

You can read more about this ludicrous legislation, the misleadingly named Keeping Politics Out of Federal Contracting Act, in the message I sent you this past Wednesday.

We have to stop this corruption-enabling legislation here and now. To do that, we need money to take on the Chamber and other forces that facilitate the takeover of our democracy.

Public Citizen is working to keep the bill from being voted on by the full Senate. We’re working to make sure President Obama will veto it if it ever gets to his desk. And we’re highlighting the absurdity of the bill’s premise that revealing corporate political spending enables, rather than exposes, corruption.

Tom Donohue and other accomplices to oligarchy fantasize about a world dominated by limitlessly powerful corporations.

Let’s spoil their fantasy.
